J-1 Eligibility Requirements

Ensure you meet the requirements to participate in a J-1 internship or trainee program.

For Interns
Currently studying or recently graduated
Age
18 years of age or older
Education
Current full-time student with at least 2 semesters completed
Or recent graduate — within 12 months of graduation date. All obtained outside the U.S.
Offer
Must have a U.S. host company offer secured
Exception: Premium Hospitality — Intrax handles placement

For Trainees
Degree plus professional experience abroad
Age
20 years of age or older
Education + Experience
Degree or professional certificate plus at least 1 year of relevant work experience outside the U.S.
Or 5 years of work experience outside the U.S. in the field.

Your host company also needs to qualify

In addition to your own eligibility, the U.S. company hosting your J-1 program must meet these requirements. If you're not sure whether your host qualifies, contact us and we'll help you check.

Must have an Employer Identification Number (EIN)

Must have Workers' Compensation Insurance, or proof of exemption or self-insured status

Minimum of 5 full-time employees per intern or trainee for companies hosting more than one participant

Annual revenue of $3 million or at least 25 employees, or agree to an on-site visit

The training Site of Activity (SOA) must have at least 50% American employees

Direct supervisor listed on the DS-7002 Training/Internship Placement Plan must be on-site — not remote

English must be the primary language spoken in the office and on the company's business website
