Every J-1 applicant needs a J-1 visa sponsor designated by the U.S. Department of State. Your sponsor issues the Form DS-2019 required to apply for a J-1 visa, reviews your eligibility and program, monitors your participation, and provides support throughout your stay in the United States.
Because your sponsor is involved at every stage of the J-1 process, choosing the right one matters. Sponsors can differ significantly in processing times, fees, placement assistance, program options, and the level of support they provide.
At Intrax Global Internships, we’ve served as a J-1 sponsor for work-based training programs since 2003. Through our partners around the world, we help thousands of international students and graduates each year gain professional experience in the United States. The guide below explains what sponsors do, how to compare them, and what to consider before choosing one.
What Do J-1 Visa Sponsors Do?
A J-1 visa sponsor is an organization the U.S. Department of State has designated to administer Exchange Visitor Programs under federal regulations. Exchange Visitor Programs exist to strengthen ties between the United States and other countries through cultural and professional exchange, and sponsors are the gatekeepers who make sure each program serves that purpose.
In practice, your sponsor handles four jobs:
- Screening and approval: The sponsor reviews your eligibility and internship or training offer, and confirms your host company can deliver real training with on-site supervision.
- Issuing your DS-2019: The sponsor creates your Exchange Visitor record in SEVIS and issues Form DS-2019, which you need to complete your visa application. Global Internships' quoted program fee includes the SEVIS I-901 fee, and Intrax pays it on your behalf. Without a designated sponsor to issue the DS-2019, you cannot apply for a J-1 visa.
- Building your DS-7002 training plan: For interns and trainees, the sponsor works with your host company to structure the training phases officers review during your interview.
- Monitoring and support: Sponsors have ongoing regulatory responsibilities for you throughout your program. They track your arrival, insurance, and program changes, and step in when something goes wrong at your host company.
Why Do You Need a J-1 Visa Sponsor?
Sponsorship is a legal requirement you cannot skip. The State Department does not accept J-1 applications directly from individuals.
Your host company cannot vouch for you unless it happens to be a designated sponsor itself, and very few companies are. The sponsor is the bridge between you, your host company, and the U.S. government.
J-1 sponsors are designated federally, so you do not need a sponsor based in your home country or in the U.S. state where you will intern. A designated sponsor can support a placement in California, Texas, or New York from anywhere in the United States. What matters is that the sponsor is designated for your visa category, such as Intern or Trainee.
Where Can I Find the Official List of J-1 Visa Sponsors?
The U.S. Department of State publishes the full list of designated sponsors, searchable by program category and state, at its official sponsor search page. Every legitimate sponsor should appear there.
If an organization claims to sponsor J-1 participants but does not appear on the State Department's list, confirm its designation status before proceeding.
Use the list this way:
- Filter by your program category. Interns and trainees should search either the Intern or Trainee category, which are separate designations.
- Shortlist three to five sponsors that serve your field and home country.
- Verify each shortlisted sponsor's designation status, then compare their services, fees, and processing times directly on each organization’s website.
The official list tells you which organizations are authorized to sponsor J-1 participants, but it does not rank them or assess the quality of their services. Once you've confirmed a sponsor's designation, you'll need to compare them yourself.
How Much Does J-1 Visa Sponsorship Cost?
Our 2027 pricing calculator quotes a bundled program fee by country of permanent residence and duration. Compare the same country, program length, and included services when evaluating sponsors:
- Application review: included in the calculator's program fee
- Germany, six month internship program: €1,140, excluding insurance
- France, six month internship program: €1,390, including insurance
- SEVIS I-901 fee: included in the program quote and paid by Intrax on your behalf
- Insurance: inclusion varies by country; Germany's quote excludes coverage, which Intrax must verify separately
There is no single worldwide six-month total. The sponsor quote excludes the normal US$185 visa application fee, any applicable issuance fee, optional services, and travel and living costs.
The $220 SEVIS fee is included in the program quote, rather than added on top. Ask competing sponsors to identify what their own quotes include.
Global Internships' standard DS-2019 turnaround is within two weeks of a complete application. Its expedited option is four business days after a complete application, full payment, and confirmation that the host company is compliant. The additional fee varies by country.

How to Choose a J-1 Visa Sponsor: 5-Point Checklist
All designated sponsors can issue a DS-2019. The right sponsor for you comes down to five things:
- Category fit: The sponsor must be designated for your exact category (in this case, Intern or Trainee) and should know your field. A sponsor that places engineers all day may have existing relationships with host companies and understand what makes a strong engineering training plan.
- Processing speed: Ask each sponsor how long the DS-2019 takes and whether an expedited option exists.
- Transparent, published fees: A sponsor that posts its full fee schedule is showing you how it operates and making it easier for you to budget for your program.
- Support during your program: Your sponsor should be there for you when you have questions, anything changes with your program, or you need to extend your program. Ask what support looks like after you arrive.
- Track record you can verify: An experienced sponsor adds peace of mind, and a list of companies they partner with helps lay out your options. We name our host companies publicly on our companies page, including SpaceX, Chanel, Delta Air Lines, Figma, Jane Street, Robinhood, and Equilar.
If you’re weighing up a few different sponsors, this checklist can help you make a choice that best fits your situation.

How to Get a J-1 Visa Sponsor: 4 Steps
Once you choose a sponsor, the process usually looks like this:
- Apply to the sponsor: Submit your resume, passport copy, either your internship offer or a placement request, and any other requested documents. If the sponsor requests something else from you, replying quickly can keep your application moving.
- Finalize your training plan: For interns and trainees, the sponsor works with your host company to complete Form DS-7002. The plan outlines your training phases, duties, supervision, and compensation and must be reviewed and approved as part of the sponsorship process.
- Receive your DS-2019: Once your program has been approved, the sponsor creates your SEVIS record and issues your Form DS-2019. Intrax's standard turnaround is up to two weeks from a complete application. Four-business-day expedited processing is available for an additional country-specific fee after a complete application, full payment, and confirmation that the host company is compliant. The quoted program fee includes SEVIS, which Intrax pays on your behalf.
- Apply for the visa: Use the information on your DS-2019 to complete the DS-160, pay the $185 visa application fee, and schedule your visa interview. Our guides to J-1 visa processing time and J-1 visa interview questions can help you understand what to expect.
For Companies: How to Become a J-1 Visa Sponsor
If you are a U.S. employer looking to host international interns or trainees, you generally do not need to become a designated J-1 sponsor yourself. Most companies host participants through an organization that the U.S. Department of State has already designated to administer Exchange Visitor Programs.
Becoming a designated sponsor is a separate process intended for organizations that want to administer J-1 programs. The application requires an electronic Form DS-3036, evidence of compliance with Exchange Visitor Program regulations, supporting corporate documentation, and a non-refundable $3,982 designation fee, followed by ongoing reporting obligations to the State Department.
For most employers, working with an existing sponsor is the more practical option. The sponsor handles the J-1 program requirements, including issuing the DS-2019 and reviewing the participant's training plan, while the company provides the internship or training opportunity and supervises the participant's day-to-day work.
We work with host companies of every size, and our companies page explains how hosting works, including site visit requirements for smaller companies.
Choose a J-1 Visa Sponsor You Can Verify
Your choice of sponsor affects how quickly you receive your DS-2019, how robust your training plan is, and how much support you have once you arrive in the U.S.
When selecting a sponsor, confirm that they’re on the official State Department list, make sure you understand what their fees include, and run them through the 5-step checklist above.

常见问题
哪家J-1签证sponsor最便宜?
There is no single cheapest sponsor for every applicant. Compare quotes for your country of permanent residence, program length, and requested services, including SEVIS, insurance, and any placement support. Global Internships' pricing calculator includes SEVIS in the program fee; insurance inclusion varies by country.
How do you verify a J-1 visa sponsor is legitimate before you pay them?
Search for the sponsor on the State Department's official sponsor search page before sending any money, and confirm the designation is current for your category. A legitimate sponsor issues a DS-2019 with a valid SEVIS number you can look up. Be cautious of any sponsor that asks for large upfront payments before doing any screening work, cannot explain its DS-2019 turnaround time, or has no verifiable placement history.
Can you change J-1 visa sponsors mid-program?
According to Intrax's program guidance, sponsor transfers are not permitted for Intern or Trainee programs. The sponsor listed on your Form DS-2019 remains responsible for administering your program, including monitoring your placement, ensuring that your training or internship follows your approved Training/Internship Placement Plan (Form DS-7002), and completing required evaluations.
Are J-1 trainee visa sponsors different from intern sponsors?
Sponsors need a separate State Department designation for each category, so a sponsor designated for Interns is not automatically designated for Trainees. The two categories also have different program-length limits and eligibility requirements. If you're comparing sponsors, make sure the organization is designated for the specific category you qualify for.
Does a J-1 visa sponsor's designation ever expire or get revoked?
Yes, it can, as sponsor designation is not permanent. Sponsors must maintain at least five actively participating exchange visitors per year to keep their designation, and the State Department reviews designated sponsors periodically, declining to renew or revoking a sponsor's designation if it falls out of compliance with Exchange Visitor Program regulations. That is one more reason to choose a sponsor with a long, verifiable track record, since newer or smaller sponsors have less history to check against.
